RSA has been working for the John Innes Centre (JIC) since 1986 when they were commissioned as Building Services Engineers to undertake the full design and construction stage duties associated with the relocation of The Cambridge Laboratory to Norwich.
The initial large site development included the following: Establishment of a new modern Cambridge Laboratory, new Sainsbury Laboratory, altering and modernizing existing Cell Biology Laboratories, Goods-in areas, new site Library Building, new refrigerated and low humidity Seed Store, new Controlled-Environment Building new Low Serviced, Highly Serviced and Containment Glasshouses together with Linking Corridors, Potting Rooms and Field Laboratories and Stores etc. Reinforcing existing site infrastructure including establishing new high voltage sub-stations to serve new buildings together with standby electrical supplies.
Extending site medium pressure hot water central boilerplant and group heating installation to serve buildings. Reinforcing Towns gas supply to energy centre serving heat generation plant and laboratory use. Establishment of new borehole and boosted water storage system to serve the buildings and for crop watering.
Establishment of self-intelligent building management system BEMS to control and data-log building systems operation together with head-end PCs facilitating central monitoring to aid maintenance and energy conservation.
Following the initial large site re-development RSA have continued to be commissioned over the years to provide consultancy services including the following: Feasibility study for relocating Nitrogen Fixation Laboratory from University of Sussex to Norwich.
Design for new stand-alone Controlled Environment Building for rice growing. The building was designed to cater for twelve independently controlled Controlled Environment Rooms CERs(initially equipped with three CERs) complete with entrance lobby, potting room, plant room each with access to an internal barrier-corridor serving the CERs.
Infrastructure included new liquid chilling plant, RO water treatment plant, LTMP heating, LV electrical supplies, lighting, fire alarm installation etc. Design and tender separately fully-equipped CERs incorporating flooded rice benches for contractor to manage.
Design for new self-contained single storey Insectary Building comprising five insect rooms, one glasshouse, one laboratory, together with access corridor and a roofspace plantroom. Feasibility for new Sainsbury Laboratory. Computer program for electricity and gas consumption at site to enable engineering department to calculate and monitor energy consumption with costs against actual meter readings and instigate possible savings by controlling building usage in consultation with users.
